These South African Smoky Quartz specimens arrived alongside our recent shipment of natural South African Citrine. While they share the same geological origin and formed under similar conditions, these particular crystals display much deeper smoky coloration than the golden tones required for us to confidently identify them as natural citrine.
Some specimens may reveal subtle champagne or golden hues when viewed in bright natural sunlight, but at Bella Luna Crystal we prefer to classify minerals conservatively. Rather than labeling these as citrine, we believe they are best represented as Smoky Quartz so you know exactly what you're purchasing.
In many crystal traditions, Smoky Quartz is associated with grounding, protection, emotional resilience, and gently releasing unwanted energy. Many people enjoy working with Smoky Quartz during meditation, mindfulness, or intention-setting practices as a reminder to stay centered during periods of change. These metaphysical associations are shared as part of longstanding crystal traditions.
Geologically, Smoky Quartz is a naturally occurring variety of quartz (SiO₂). Its smoky gray to brown coloration develops when natural background radiation interacts with trace amounts of aluminum within the crystal lattice over millions of years. Depending on the amount of natural irradiation and the mineral chemistry of the crystal, coloration can range from the faintest champagne tint to nearly black morion quartz.
About This Specimen
Each specimen has been left in its natural form to preserve its original crystal structure and growth features. You'll notice natural variations in color, transparency, inclusions, and crystal habit that make every piece unique. Some specimens may display subtle golden flashes or champagne tones in certain lighting, reflecting the close geological relationship between these crystals and the natural citrine found in the same deposit.

Photo & Product Note
Photos represent the quality and overall appearance of the specimen you will receive. As with all natural minerals, expect variations in color, crystal habit, clarity, inclusions, and natural growth features. We do not edit our photos, though colors may appear slightly different depending on your screen settings.
Care
Smoky Quartz has a Mohs hardness of approximately 7, making it a durable mineral for everyday display. Clean gently with warm water and a soft cloth to maintain its natural luster.
Why We Chose to Call These Smoky Quartz
At Bella Luna Crystal, we believe accurate mineral identification is more important than using a more marketable name. Although these crystals arrived with our natural citrine and some display hints of golden color in sunlight, they are predominantly smoky in appearance. We feel Smoky Quartz is the most accurate description and reflects our commitment to transparency and education.
